Fela Kuti

I saw Finding Fela last night, a documentary about Fela Kuti, the originator of Afrobeat. How have I not been listening to this groove, beat, trance merchant since the 70s?? Perhaps it was because “[n]o one knew how to pick the most advantageous three minutes out of his African symphonies and give him a hit single…”. His bands Africa 70 and Egypt 80 were very disciplined for those 30 minute compositions that he compared to the length of pieces created by Bach and Beethoven. He also showed a lot of courage standing up to the Nigerian regime.

I did manage to find King Sunny Adé and his African Beats, but that is a different musical form,  Nigerian jùjú.
