Malzmühle, Köln

I met an old friend at Barbarossa Platz in Köln and we decided to go to Malzmühle for some traditional Kölsch food. We hopped on a tram and ended up near the Heumarkt stop. I decided on the creamed herring with boiled potatoes and a Stange of Kölsch.

There were two kinds of herring salad, one with beets and one without. I must say after all these years that I was disappointed with the Kölsch beer. It is really not so different than an Estrella or Moritz from Spain. Perhaps it is because in the 80s when I first drank Kölsch, it had so much more taste than American beers. And now with the hyperhopping of American beer, a simple Kölsch has a hard time keeping up.
